Dwayne Jones
With over twenty years experience in community and economic development, Dwayne Jones came to San Francisco in 1998 as the Executive Director of Young Community Developers in Bayview Hunters Point. As the new Director he grew the organization to national recognition from $300,000 to $5 Million in a 4 year period creating jobs 2300 jobs for residents. In 2004 Mr. Jones, was appointed by Mayor Newsom as the Director of the Mayor’s Office of Community Development, Mr. Jones is responsible for the implementation of San Francisco’s community development strategy allocating over $30 million for revitalization efforts annually. As an advocate for social justice and economic development, he positions residents as the first beneficiary of community revitalization and creates jobs through training programs and small business creation. In 2006, Mr. Jones was promoted to Director of Community Investments and Outcomes and head of the Communities of Opportunity (COO) initiative- a public/private partnership between the City of San Francisco and local philanthropy to facilitate system reform and strategically leverage the city’s $7Billion in physical and economic investments. This placed-based community transformation effort is charged with setting the foundation of poverty eradication in the Southeastern section of San Francisco. In 2008, he was appointed to the San Francisco Housing Authority Commission helping to develop policy to rebuild all public housing in need of repair without the displacement of current residents. Dwayne Jones has been recognized for his innovation in community/economic development by long list of civic leaders from Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, Mayor Willie Brown and Speaker of the House, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. Mr. Jones holds two undergraduate degrees from UC Berkeley and a Graduate Degree from Hayward State University He is nationally recognized as a social entrepreneur because of his ability to develop "Community to Business" relationships with residents, employers, and unions. His innovative theory of change is reshaping the manner which community development is delivered throughout the nation. Mr. Jones plans to continue his community development work by establishing a Saturday academic academy for 500 black and brown boys grades 3, 4, 5th throughout San Francisco in 2011.
